Restaurant Review – Kedai Kopi Pak Lang, Port Dickson

Kedai Kopi Pak Lang - Halal Chinese Coffee Shop in PD

In our 2 years in Port Dickson, we only just drive pass this kopitiam called Kedai Kopi Pak Lang. Thinking that it is a Chinese Coffee Shop, therefore not halal. Don't be mislead by the sign board. All the food here is Halal, the restaurant is run by Aunty Ain - a Chinese Muslim.

One day looking for a place to have breakfast, our regular breakfast venues were all closed. Maybe they were all still in the Raya mood. So we just took a chance to check if this place was halal. We were were met by the owner, a friendly Muslim Chinese lady. So we were assured that is was halal.

The concept of this place is of a typical old Chinese coffee shop. Not the commercialized kopitiam like Kluang Cafe or Pak Hailam. From the menu, we found the food served were mainly Chinese dishes.

For breakfast they have the normal nasi lemak bungkus on the table, roti bakar, boiled eggs. They even have western dishes like French toast. But the nasi lemak bungkus at the table caught our attention. The rice was nice but we didn't quite like the sambal there, we were used to our sweet tasting sambal. This was something different. Ordered the roti bakar which was the best. Nicely brown with a thick slab of butter and kaya. As usual a local coffee for me. For my wife was sirap. The bill came up to RM9.60. We had two nasi lemak bungkus, one sirap, one coffee, roti bakar and an omelette for my son.

We will be going back there for some Chinese Food for lunch. There was quite a number of good reviews on their Chinese Food in some popular Travel Forums.

Restaurant Review - Lunch Venues in Port Dickson

Where to have Lunch in Port Dickson

Looking for good pork free places to have lunch in Port Dickson can be a daunting task. So here’s a simple list of restaurants that serve nice and tasty lunch in Port Dickson. Here is where those staying in Port Dickson normally go for lunch.

Restaron Kulit Kayu Manis

This restaurant have a few branches around Port Dickson  nevertheless the one I like to go is located en route to Lukut town. At the Restoran Kulit Kayu Manis, there is a variety of local dishes to select from, all in all about 20 different dishes.. You choose what you want from the food displayed and they only charge you what you have taken. Its quite reasonably priced. The restaurant is quite popular with the locals as well as the regulars to Port Dickson, therefore you should head there early because the majority of the dishes will likely be finished by 1.30pm. I like eating here cause not only is the food nice, the service and ambience is also good. The landmark to look for is the Sunshine Hotel since it is located below the hotel
.

Sukand Food Station

Sukand’s Food Station Kopitiam  is situated in the city centre of Port Dickson, The landmark to look for is the Ambank  as well as the Port Dickson Bus Terminal. Their signature dish is the Hailam Chicken Rice which I usually order for my sons. As for me I will always have their Mee Kari and my wife naturally the laksa. They also serve western food here like mushroom soup, fries, chicken chop, waffle with ice cream and so on. As for beverages they have the standard kopitiam fare such as local coffee, ice coffee, sirap  and many more. It might be a little pricey to some however service here is quite fast, Sukand Food also serves breakfast and dinner too.

Medan Selera Seri Bayu

When we were residing in Shah Alam, we used to frequent Port for a short getaway as its about an hours drive from Shah Alam. Whenever we are in Port Dickson, we will visit the Medan Selera Seri Bayu for their Siput Sedut. Siput Sedut which could be regarded as the Malaysian Version of the Escagot. In Port Dickson they usually cook it with coconut  milk just like my grandmother used to make. A word of caution, as with all shell fish be careful exactly where you eat. I had a bad case of diarrhea when I ate at a shop in Teluk Kemang. Medan Selera Seri Bayu is located just infront of the Bayu Resort or PD Yacht Club. Its basically a food court with shops selling a variety of pre cooked dishes for you to choose from. Same as the Restaron Kulit Kayu Manis, pay what you have taken. Medan Selera Seri Bayu is located near the Port Dickson  military camp, lunch is normally very busy with soldiers having lunch.

Restaurant Review - Ramadan Buffet at PNB Ilham Port Dickson

  ABC Counter

This year I started my Ramadan Buffet Hopping at the PNB Ilham Resort in Port Dickson. The local food there is said to be very tasty. PNB Ilham Resort is located at the edge of Cape Rachado. Its a walking distance from the Tanjung Tuan Lighthouse. The architecure of the building is of the Malacca Sultanate as it is located on the border between Melaka and Negeri Sembilan. This is also the reason why their time to break fast follows Melaka which is 1 minute earlier than Port Dickson. As it was the first week of the Ramadan, there were not much people dining. Muslims normally dine out a week after the Ramadan starts. The buffet Ramadan in Ilham was served in their ballroom which was overlooking the sea. It is priced at RM42.00 nett for adults.

Enjoying the view, before breaking fast

For the main course station they served Nasi Bryani, Siput Sedut Masak Lemak (my favourite), Daging Satay which was well marinated and tasty, Ayam Masak Merah, a vegetable dish. Outside at the Gazebo there was stalls of Murtabak, Goreng Pisang, Fried Noodles and a whole BBQ Lamb. There was also 6 types of cold beverages, teh tarik and nescafe tarik. All in all it was worth it for RM42.00 nett for adults. Only shortcoming of the Ilham Resort is the distance from the main road and also their limited parking. So for the second and following week of Ramadhan come eraly to secure a parking space.

Starting a restaurant looks very lucrative simply because people generally love to eat and we eat out lot..!! Asians are some lucky lots who can afford to have breakfast, lunch, tea, dinner and supper without having to know how to cook and without poking huge holes in our wallets. Eating out is part of our culture. We eat out all the time. This explains the numerous restaurants, cafes, warungs, bistros, or kopitiams in almost every corner of Asian countries. It seems like everyone knows and wants to open a restaurant.

You don’t need to be a chef to open a restaurant. In fact, most restaurant owners can’t even cook.! Many are politicians, singers, actors, models, housewives, retirees, businessmen who love food or even foreigners who want to introduce food from their homelands. While anybody can open a restaurant, it takes a trully hardworking, dedicated and discipline entrepreneur to open and operate a successful restaurant. Here is a detailed step-by-step ebook to guide you in planning your finances, obtaining necessary licenses and opening your first restaurant in Malaysia

Restaurant Review :- Ramadhan Buffet at Grand Lexis Port Dickson

Aneka Rasa Ramadhan Buffet at Duyung Restaurant

Every year during the Holy Month of Ramadhan, most hotels or food outlets will set up buffets for the Muslim guest and friends to break fast to. Some hotels like to have theme dinners like P. Ramlee, Balik Kampung and so on. The reason I like going to Ramadhan Buffets is the same as why I like to go to the Bazaar Ramadhan. There is always new food to taste as most hotels will showcase their best and try to be different from the rest.

This year I went to the Grand Lexis Port Dickson to sample their Ramadhan Fare. The buffet was served in the Duyung Restaurant, which is quite small. So if you intend to bring a large group, you better make reservations. There are a lot of varieties to choose from.

There’s a large table loaded with all types of salads, ulam, sambal and appetizers. For the cold drinks there are seven types to choose from. They have even added the Chocolate Milk for the kids. For dessert or something sweet to open the fast with there’s lots of kuih, jelly, pastries and even a chocolate fountain.

For the Main course you will have about 12 dishes to choose from with has something of everything. From Western Dishes, Chinese Dishes and Malay Dishes. There was even Vegetable Tempura on the buffet.

This is not the end. Walk outside and you will find stalls of Noodle Soup, Murtabak, Satay, Ikan Bakar, Roasted Lamb, Banana Fritters and a cook to order pasta station.

A must try is their Nyonya Assam Pedas. Not too spicy but very nice.

A point to note their Ramadhan Buffet ends on the 28th July 2013. Priced at RM88.00 nett adults and RM43.00 nett child.

Restaurant Review- Waranee Thai Restaurant

A Gem in Port Dickson

As I have mentioned in my previous post, its so hard to find good and reasonally priced food outlets in Port Dickson. So finding this Gem of a restaurant was great. A friend book this place as a venue to celebrate a birthday. Waranee is a little restaurant hidden away in Kampung Gelam, Port Dickson. If you are heading from Pantai Cahaya Negeri, look for the junction with the Shell refinery on right. At the junction turn left. Drive straight thats where you will come to a row of shophouses on the right. On the left is a row of double storey houses. The signage looks like most Thai Restaurants in Malaysia. The shop is nothing fancy. But food is great and reasonable. A plate of Thai Fried rice is RM5.00.

As for us, we preordered our dinner. The first course was raw vegetables such as carrots, cucumber, young corn served with a very spicy chili paste. Coming from Melaka we love our food spicy, the first course was heavenly. The chili paste was really really spicy. I am not sure whats inside as the owner said it was a secret recipe. After that was Tom Yam Seafood with some really large prawns. For the main course we had spicy lamb, fish cooked in a lime sauce, deepfried fish with Thai sauce, a vegetable dish and crab and mango salad. My favourite was the fish in lime sauce. I miss that alot after coming back from Koh Samui. For the dessert we had the Pumpkin Custard. Every dish that came out was beautifully decorated and tasty.

As I have worked in Thailand for about a year and half, I can fairly say that the food here is authentic Thai. So if you looking for good Thai food in Port Dickson head over to the at Waranee Thai Restaurant. They are opened for lunch and dinner. And closed on Wednesdays

The location is so amazing you\'ll forgive for the lack of luxury hotels. Just suck it up and dive into paradise.
