Must try Fruits in Malaysia

Must Try Fruits when in Malaysia

With its tropical climate Malaysia has an abundant of exotic fruit trees. Some are seasonal like the durian and rambutans. And others are available all year round. During the fruit season sometime between May to September, you will find fruit stalls popping out everywhere. Along the highways some reststops have even added shoplots selling local fruits like the reststop in Tapah and Bukit Gantang. Below are a few of some of the must try fruits.

Durian

This is a must try when you are in Malaysia. If you have never experienced a durian ,it is most definitely something that MUST be tried at least once in your lifetime. Durian is lovingly called the "King of Fruits" by its fans. A quote that I like about this fruit is from a French man. He says eating durian is like eating custard on a toilet seat. It smells like hell but taste like heaven. Durian is a seasonal fruit which normally lasts from June until August, similar to other Malaysian fruits like mangosteen, jackfruit, and mango. The durian fruit is the size of a football with a rough and thorny skin around it. The tree can grow up to a height of 50 meters and have a long life. Ripe and ready to eat durians normally fall naturally, That is why you can't pluck durian fruits you have to wait for it to fall. Which is good as the tree is so high. So avoid standing under durian trees especially during their fruit season. You might get a thorny head ache. To get to its soft custard pulp, you need to cut open its thick thorny crust. I can go on and on about this wonderful fruit but I think you better let your tastebuds be the judge. But a word of advise eat this fruit in moderation cause this is a very heaty fruit. If you eat alot you will feel very hot the whole day. Now there are a few Rest and Relax Stops in Malaysia that have stalls selling local fruits one such area is the Bukit Gantang Rest Stop.

Mangosteen
If Durian is refered to as the King of Fruits, then Mangosteen is often called the Queen of Fruits. Legend has it the the former queen of England, Queen Victoria was so taken by this fruit that she offered Knighthood to anyone who could bring her fresh supplies. I think that's why its called the Queen of Fruits. Its the size of a tennis ball, purple in or maroon in colour. The fruit inside is white in colour. It is easy to open by merely pressing between the palms until the shell cracks. Care must be taken when opening the fruit, as the reddish-black skin gives out a purplish juice that stains fabric and can be almost impossible to remove. This is the reason why together with durian, mangosteen is ban in hotels.

Rambutan
The rambutan fruit season takes place twice a year. The word "rambut" in 'rambutan' means "hairy " in Malay which refers to its hairy exterior. In this hairy exterior you will find a white, almost translucent egg shaped fruit similar to lychees or longans. To get to this fruit you can use a sharp knife to cut around the hairy skin then twist off the top half of its skin. Break open to its fruit. Or you can do what I normally do. Use my teeth and bite down gently. As the fruit inside normally very sweet inside, it attracts large ants that sting painfully. So you must be really careful when you bite down or you might get a swollen lip.

Jackfruit (Nangka)
Jackfruit is the larger version of the Durian but its thorns are not as sharp niether is its smell not as strong as the durian. A jackfruit or ' Nangka' as its known in, Malaysia can weight up to 20 Kg, therefore its the largest fruit in the world. You need a sharp knife to cut it open and inside it are many bright yellow yummy crunchy segments. They taste sweet and has a very enticing aroma. That's why when you visit some plantations you will see that the fruits are covered with a cloth or bag to avoid animals getting to it. The jackfruit is also coated with batter and deepfried. Its usually served as an afternoon tea snack together with banana fritters.

Rose apple or Jambu Air
Rose Apple also known as "Jambu Air" is one of my favourite fruits to munch. The Jambu Air is a bell-shaped fruitThe flesh is scented, juicy and slightly sweet. which is juicy, crispy and crunchy. That's why its called "Jambu Air" when litterally translated to English means "Water Guava". Like apples, jambu air can eaten whole. You can a small bag of already cut fruits at most rest stop and its a great thirst quencher while driving in the Malaysian hit weather. Some like to dip it in a rojak sauce.

Free Restaurant Menus Templates

A restaurant menu is the most important selling tool in any food related establishment. In the menu you will normally find what is offered by the restaurant. A beautifully created menu will surely entice the customer to dine in. I have found out that apart from mouthwatering explanations, pictures of deliciously prepared food really attract customers to try items that are new to them. I feel they are not sure on what they are going to order, so a picture helps them to decide. A classic example is when Mr.Bean from the Mr.Bean comedy series orders a Steak Tartare and is surprised to find it raw. Designing a menu is a very daunting tasks, but as I have mentioned in my previous post Restaurant Promotion Ideas- Some Ideas From the Web. The World Wide Web is loaded with ideas, help and tutorials. There's even websites giving out free Restaurant Menu Templates in Word format. You can download it, edit it to suit your restaurant and later print it. Its really simple.

The Brilliant Basics to Exceptional Restaurant Service

Service in the front is as important as as a good chef. I have mentioned this in my website Restaurant Promo Ideas previously. You can have the best Michelin Star Chef, but if your staff can't sell the product or can't get the food item to the customers table properly and promptly. You will slowly loose your customers. As customers are the life blood of any restaurant, your business will gradually decline. There are lots of resources on the net to help you train your service staff both free and with a price tag. This free ebook consist of 13 chapters of the author's experiences and knowledge in relation to restaurant service. The Brilliant Basics to Exceptional Restaurant Service

Waze-A Review of my Favourite Navigation App

A friend recommended this app to me one day when we were discussing navigation apps for android. I normally use Google Maps but some roads in Malaysia is not updated updated on Google. My friend suggested an app called Waze. I tried it and now its my travelling companion when I drive. Waze is really cool GPS driving and navigation app. It is a social based app where Waze users or Wazers as they are known can contribute traffic and other road data. Wazers can quickly and easily use its interface to report road incidents like police speed traps, traffic jams, hazards or accidents. So if you are driving along the route you will get a heads up on whats ahead. The icons are really large so its easy to work on even when you are driving. As this is a social app, wazers contribute to the making of maps by just pressing the paving icon. So you have billions of people assisting in building a map. Therefore the maps are updated in real time. Its a really useful app to have and you don't have to purchase a Garmin or Tom Tom. The only problem so far I have with the app, is that there are some location cannot be located. So what I do is search on Google Maps the location and look for the location. Look for any landmarks nearby and later search those landmarks in Waze. I tried this when we wanted to source an alternate route to my Auntie's house in Alor Gajah. I normally travel by the highway but this time I wanted to avoid the highway. Waze got me there and its estimate time of arrival is also quite accurate. I can go on and on about this great app, but it will take this whole lense. Just click on its website to find out more www.waze.com. Restaurant Promotion Ideas:- HalloweenTheme Party

Halloween like Valentine's Day and Mother's Day is another festival that is currently being commerlized by businesses especially those related to Food and Beverage. Instead of doing it on the Halloween day like most establishments, we held our ipromotion for a week and on the Halloween’s Day we made it really grand. As with most of my promotions in this blog, below is a simple account on how we organised our Halloween Week. Hope if it will be of some help for your establishment.

Halloween Cocktails
First of all we needed to have cocktails. A word of advise when creating cocktails for promotions, avoid using heavy juices, cream or milk. Reason being these heavy juices will make your customers full, therefore they will avoid ordering another one. Also don't make too strong, as customers will be too drunk to order another. You can search the World Wide Web for cocktail ideas. What I normally do when searching for ideas for a promotions is to go to any site even ones that talks about how to organise Hallooween parties at home. Some of the ideas can be used or modified to suit your establishment. A great site that I happen to come across is www.endlesssimmer.com. Just click here to view it www.endlesssimmer.com.There's one interesting cocktail called the Brain Hemmorage. You don't even have to purchase expensive garnishes, you can create some with simple things around. Just buy cookie cutter shaped like a ghost or skeleton. Cut thin slices of honeydew melon or other fruit that doesn't break easily that is white or cream in colour. Use the cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Create dark red cocktails and float a ghostly garnish on top of it. The www.endlesssimmer.com website have a granish that is created from lychee, black olives and some red food colouring to make eye balls. Its really gross and simple to do.

Halloween Decorations There is alot of Hallooween decorations for home websites that you can use. Just choose your theme. You don't have to do the normally ghostly house, just do something different. As our Pub had a Pirate Theme, we chose the Theme from the Flying Dutchman of the Pirates of the Carribean Series. The entrance was shaped like a scene from a ghostly pirate cave. Staff was dressed in Ghostly Pirate Costumes. We even played ghostly piped organ music. Just think what's your theme is and search the web. You can even go a step furtherby offering a discount to anyone that comes dressed as the theme. Try this website for some ideas http://tlc.howstuffworks.com.

What would you pay for this guidance? ... read on to find out more!!! To know more Click Here!

Halloween Games
To add more fun to your promotion just add some fun games. Listed below are sites where you can find some interesting pub games to try. If you have an adult pub (what I mean is if your clientele are mainly adults not families), then add some games for couples to make it fun. We had a couple game where we tied a large sausage in the middle and hung it up. Each couple had to start eating at each end. the couple that finished the sausage is the winner. Another was the toilet seat toss. We put a road cone on the dance floor measured the distance and gave three toilet seat for the guest to throw into the cone. the winner is the one with the highest number of toilet seats around the cone. Or you can also watch sme game show like a gameshow using household items “A Minute to Win It”. You can search the show on YouTube. I found it to be really interesting and simple to organise.

Halloween Flyers I my last post Free Restaurant Templates, I found a website that has a great Halloween poster. The website is called http://www.menutemplates.org. They have a eent menu templates that you can redesign to suit your promotion. You can also add anyone that comes dressed as in a Halloween Costume will get drinks at a special price.

Theme Parties are fun to do. It also will create a buzz on the social networks when guest post their pictures or write something in their blog on the fun they had in your place. Do drop by often for more Restaurant Promo Ideas.

Restaurant Promo Ideas #14- Repeat Business with Balloons

Balloon Giveaway To Kids

Recently I joined a family resort as the head of the Food and Beverage Department. As with most businesses, we are always looking for ways to enhance our customers experience thus bringing in repeat business. In my previous post "Restaurant Promo Idea #13-Promote through Kids", I've mentioned that kids choose 50% of restaurant visits and according to a recent study 75% of parents consider their kids preference when choosing a restaurant. So we added a few things like a corner in the breakfast buffet, food ideal for kids like oatmeal porridge, fish fingers. All kids love balloons, so we have incorporated some balloon giveaways in our restaurant. Below are two ways we used balloons to enhance our customers experience, thus bringing in repeat business.

Give out balloons

Most hotels and resorts in Malaysia include breakfast with their room. Ours is one of them. As most families will come for breakfast especially on weekends and public holidays, we took this opportunity to capture the kids. What we did was to have one staff go around giving out colourful balloons on sticks to the kids. The balloons had our logo on them. Kids was happy (I noticed all kids love balloons, my son included) and the parents was beaming. And balloons don't cost much. You can also go a step further by putting in lucky draw vouchers in the balloons. The kids can pop the balloon and claim a prize at the cashier. Prizes can be toys or games for the kids. Have some extra empty balloons on standby cause some kids would rather not lose their balloon. You can give them a replacement one after they pop theirs.

Balloon Sculptures

For dinner which was not packaged with the room, we had to use a different approach. We got a Balloon Sculpturing Tutorial CD, practiced and learned balloon sculpturing. We set up a team of staff that knew a few balloon sculptures. So when the dinner crowd started dining, what my staff would do is go around from table to table making swords or balloon animals. The kids was so happy and it was fun for us too. They will surely remember us as a place that gave them balloons during dinner. And when their parents ask where would like to have dinner or stay they will sure to suggest our place cause of the happy memory they had. An easy balloon sculpture to learn and make is sword balloons and its a big hit with everyone, especially the kids. You can search for balloon sculpturing tutorials on youtube, but if you don't want the hassle of searching just do like what we did. Purchase a video cd. One such site selling this is www.balloontwistingwithsam.com. If you don't own a restaurant, you can also learn balloon sculpturing and be the life of any kids party.
